The Technate started as a loose collaboration of scientists, engineers, and other thinkers in America in the early years of the 20th century. By the time of The Great War, they had organized into advocates of technocracy as The North American Technate.
Disgusted by the war in Europe, and predicting the inevitable collapse of the American market, they renamed themselves The Technate and declared themselves a sovereign state. The Technate built Cirrus City, a giant urban airship, and populated it with likeminded individuals in the early 20's. As the stock market crashed and the Great Depression began, Cirrus City and The Technate were largely ignored by the American government.
By the mid 40's, America changed its mind. Being embroiled in battle with another seceded state, the Union Of New America (consisting of most of the west coast), both sides approached The Technate as a potential ally. The airborne nature and technological superiority of Cirrus City was considered very desirable, as well as technology for trade. Uninterested in helping either side, The Technate was instead viewed as a threat, and became the third combatant in Civil War Two.
Cirrus City was shot down over Nebraska in 'The Fall Of Parity' a few years later, and millions perished. The Technate, as an organization, only barely survived CWII, and went deep underground. They exist today as a shadow of what they were, a memory of a brief shining moment, now dedicated to spreading their message throughout the world.
